Where to watch the sunrise

Gisborne is well known for being the first city in the world to experience the sunrise. It is worth getting up early to experience the dawn of a new day before anyone else in this world.

In the summer months, Gisborne is up early and activity high on the walkways, in the cafes and main streets.Head to the beach and feel invigorated with new energy after seeing one of the most spectacular sunrises on this planet.

 Wainui Beach

Head just 6km east of Gisborne city centre to one of the regions most popolar beaches. From the shore you can often spot sufers in the early morning break. After an early morning walk, join the locals for coffee and kai at Zephyr Wainui, open from 8am.

 

Makorori Beach

Further along the Pacific Coast Highway, you’ll find neigbouring Makorori. Another greatt surf spot, this quiet beach is worth the visit.

A short but step 30 minute walk up Makorori Hill provides a spectacular views of Makorori and Wainui, as well views south to Te Kurī-a-Pāoa (Young Nick’s Head) and Mahia Peninsula.

East Cape Lighthouse

This iconic lighthouse can be found at ‘s New Zealand easternmost point and offers unparalleled views from atop the 700-step climb.

The three-hour drive takes you through some of the most captivating landscapes in the country as you follow along the East coast. Stop at any number of secluded beaches on the way to make the most of your journey.
